Airsoft gamers

Portraits of Airsoft fanatics at Critical Hit, an Airsoft organisation. Airsoft is a combat simulation sport. The goal is to make it all look as real as possible. I took these photo’s on site, where every player prepares himself for the ‘battle’. Some dress up to look like real life mercenaries, others want to look like an action hero, from their favourite computer game.

To some this may look shallow, nerdy or inappropriate even, considering current military developments in Europe. But when looking beyond the militarism it becomes fascinating as the contestants are just boys living their hero’s dream. The images deliver an uncanny contrast — In their normal lives they might be an employee at a local supermarket or enjoying retirement, but the moment they put on their gear and grab their replica they are in character.
